What job would you do for free?

A job that I would do for free would be helping people build gardens. I’ve been lucky to be able to volunteer for a few different projects and organizations over the years, and the one I enjoyed the most was the Master Gardner program. One of the greatest parts about that opportunity was working farmer’s markets. We would set up a booth and answer questions from people all day. People would bring in clippings of plants from their yard and ask for identification, or pest control, or any other wild questions. We would talk strategy about where and when to grow certain plants and flowers, food storage and canning ideas, companion planting, overall garden design, etc. One of the most rewarding aspects of that job was taking the knowledge I had gained and being able to see the real world applications. I was part of a pilot program that was doing garden-to-cafeteria produce at a middle and elementary school in Minneapolis. We would have kids come out to the garden and help us plant, weed, and ultimately harvest. Seeing these kids spend their detention time outside with me in the garden and get some empowerment and real world knowledge was so rewarding. There’s a few core memories from that time that will always stick with me.
