The one book that pops into mind is American Psycho, by Bret Easton Ellis. When I googled this book to make sure I spelled the author’s name correctly, this description popped up: “American Psycho was a book first, and then a movie. It’s not an easy read. Nor is it conventional, even for a fiction novel. The book alternates between weird consumeristic descriptions and graphic violence; the plot is fragmented into vignettes; and the narrator is highly unreliable.”
I agree. It was a tough book to get through. The violence was one thing, but the constant consumeristic descriptions about what brand of clothes people were wearing, to the typeface and color and weight of their business cards, was hard for my mind to wrap around. I felt myself feeling these things as well as I started reading the book, like I was being overly judgmental of real life, because the book was seeping into my reality. Does that make sense??
Another book that was difficult for me was Haunted, by Chuck Palahniuk. You can Google it if you want, but to me, this book was like reading a version of the Saw movie franchise. It felt like it was glorifying ultra-violence, and I was a little disappointed because I really enjoyed his other books, like Fight Club and Survivor.
