Daily writing prompt
Do you believe in minimalism?

Another interesting topic to discuss today. Yesterday I did not post, as I was offsite all day at a work retreat discussing proper ways to create documentation. It was actually ok…lol.
Minimalism is an interesting concept to me, especially in this consumeristic world that we live in. There have been times in my life when I didn’t have a television, I wasn’t plugged into the news, and didn’t have a smartphone, and I was blissfully content. I explored nature and connected with people. I had fishing adventures, hiking trips, and potlucks. Reflecting back, those times were more “ignorance is bliss” days. My possessions were limited to what I could load into the back of my friends’ pickup truck. As long as I had my fishing pole, snowboard, and my dog…all was good.
These days, I have a storage unit and an apartment full of stuff that I don’t necessarily need. I have held onto a lot of things that my grandfather used to own, and since his passing, I’ve had ideas of using his stuff with limited success. I have a lot of his old tools and his model airplanes and such, but I also have a lot of his stuff that I could probably let go of.
One of my best friends lives up in the mountains of Colorado by himself. No electricity, running water in the summer when the spring melts out. He hikes about 5 miles a day in the wilderness. Fishes and reads and chops wood and plans trips overseas to explore the world. He had been my adventure partner, the one that I took some unforgettable adventures with, and there is a big part of me that envies his lifestyle. I visited him two summers ago and sat around the cabin for a week and hiked and fished and painted the surroundings and listened to a lot of podcasts and just enjoyed being together. His minimalist lifestyle I could probably do. I say that, but then there are the times when I feel compelled to purchase a new hockey jersey, or something that I don’t really “need”. Here’s a pic of that trip. Thanks for being here!
