I have this dream about building a campground that is openly welcoming to all folks. I have started this website, and I am writing these daily reflections to search for a community of like-minded individuals that would be interested in such an idea. I have been dreaming about different versions of campgrounds and container homes and building tiny homes, and all of it for a few years now, and that has led me to learn some amazing things.
I have watched many hours of people building tiny homes and building out container homes. I’ve watched the content where people chainsaw some trees down, clean up the logs, and then mill their own lumber. They then use that lumber to build their own house, shed, or structure. I’ve seen people plop containers down in the woods and build out the insides and outsides into beautiful structures. I’ve dreamed of blueprints and interior layouts. Dreamed of rapidly deployable and easily repeatable container home blueprints. I have tried to take those dreams and develop project plans, timelines, and order of operations for building scenarios. I have learned about construction practices and have learned lots of tips and tricks from the research I have done.
I have learned a lot from local zoning offices about land development. I have learned about the different regulations concerning building sites, septic systems, water and power, and more. I’ve learned about water tables, flood zones, and shoreland building restrictions. I’ve had fun discussions about livestock and keeping chickens and goats. I was told that I could have 323 chickens on this certain parcel of land I was looking at. That is a lot of chickens!
I have learned that I am not very good at social media. I have seen some other folks who are trying to start up campgrounds, and they are really sharp about promotion and building brands and social media followings and such. I feel out of my league there, and I’m not sure what to do about it. I keep learning in life that it ok to ask for help, and then also to accept that help.
